FISHERMAN'S PICNIC
ANNUAL CLOTHESLINE ART SALE

AUGUST 2, 2008
Each year the Art Colony holds its annual Art Sale during Fisherman's Picnic, Grand Marais' local summer celebration. Art Festival participants, local artists, and art colony students are asked to donate work to the sale, to help support the continued efforts of the Art Colony on the North Shore and beyond. Art need not be framed and is frequently displayed on a clothesline. In 2007, the annual Art Car Paintorama began when Johnson's Foods and historical re-enactor Amber Pheil donated vehicles to be painted by two local artists, Tim Young and Holly Johnson Beaster. The Johnson's Fruit Truck and the Van of the Ancient Voyageurs were then driven in the Fisherman's Picnic Parade. Similar fun and zany art demonstrations and events about at the Art Colony during Fisherman's Picnic.

PLEIN AIRE
PAINTING COMPETITION

AUGUST 22 - 31, 2008
The Grand Marais Art Colony Annual Plein Aire Competition is organized and run by an informal group of Art Colony board members, volunteers, and local Cook County Artists. It normally takes place on the last weekend in August. The focus of the festival is to have fun in Cook County while enjoying our incredible scenery and making beautiful art work. The history of Plein Aire painting in Grand Marais goes back to the inception of the Art Colony in 1947 which Birney Quick and Company used to take their students down to Artist's Point for classes in Plein Aire painting, frequently followed by a fish fry in the Art Colony back yard.
