“Standing Stones: Ritual Sites in Western Britain”, a new fine art exhibition is now on display at the Pendarvis Historic Site Gallery, 114 Shake Rag Street in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. The show opened on May 9 and will run through October 31, 2012. An artists talk and reception on Friday, June 1 (7-9 PM) is free and open to the public.
Stunning black and white photographs by Minneapolis-based photographer Sylvia Horwitz and vibrant oil paintings by artist Peter Truran, originally from Redruth, Cornwall invite us to experience intimate contact with sacred ritual places in western Britain.
A visit to megalithic sites in Britain reveals the presence of burial tombs, standing stones, and ritual circles constructed over 5,000 years ago. Although the beliefs of ancient builders are not known, their mysterious structures appear to provide temporal markers for the changing seasons and rites of passage: fertility, birth, departure, and burial. Confronted with the length of human history and the shortness of our lifetimes we enter these timeless spaces and leave the “Standing Stones”exhibit with great respect for the architects of the Stone Age.
A presentation by Peter Truran and Sylvia Horwitz on Friday September 28 (8 PM) at Pendarvis coincides with the Cornish Society Festival. Peter will talk about how this creative project generated a desire for return to his roots in Cornwall. This event is also free with an open invitation to the public. The exhibition will close October 31, 2012 .
