This exhibit features selected summer works on paper and canvas, which attempt to capture the spirit of nature on Artist Point.  Lead by intrepid landscape painter/explorer, Neil Sherman, this informal group of painters, photographers, and sketchers meets June through October, rain or shine, to support each other in the pursuit of excellent out-door painting and celebrate the long history of Plein Air Painting at the Grand Marais Art Colony.

Open Pottery Studio Hours to Make-a-Bowl for Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is an annual fund-raiser for the local food shelf that brings awareness to hunger issues in our community.  It features soup and bread made by local restaurants and a variety of handmade bowls to eat out of made by YOU!  Join us to make a bowl to donate to the event.

The Art Colony is calling for submissions for the Member Show September 26- October 4, 2009

 The Grand Marais Art Colony is now accepting submissions for their Annual Member Show which runs Saturday, September 26- Sunday, October 4, 2009.  Artists are asked to submit up to two pieces of work, one of which must be for sale.  All work must be submitted by Friday, Sept 25, 2009 at 2 PM.  The Art Colony receives a 30% commission for all work sold. 


If you are not a member, it is easy to become one.  Simply go the Art Colony’s membership page, print out an application and send it to the Grand Marais Art Colony.  You can also call or email the Art Colony, 218-387-2737 or  Membership starts at $25.


This year we are inviting not only work done by member artists, but also Art Colony related pieces from your private collection.  If you have a piece of art that was created by an Art Colony founder, instructor, student, member, even Cook County resident, etc, please consider submitting it to our show. 


We will also be hosting our Annual Member Meeting and an Opening Brunch on Saturday, September 26, 2009.  The Member Meeting will begin at 10AM and will be an important way for members to engage in conversation about the present and future of the Art Colony.  Our Opening Brunch is open to the public and goes from 11AM-1PM.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Come one, come all to enjoy a Fish Fry and opening of the 2009 Plein Air Competition Exhibit TONIGHT (9/4/09) 5PM at the Grand Marais Art Colony. 

Painters have been up and down the shore, capturing our backyard on canvas and paper.  This is a great opportunity to view and purchase accomplished work of the local scenery.  Enjoy the artwork, stay for the fish fry dinner and awards ceremony.  All are invited to join in the festivities.

The exhibit will continue through this weekend only: Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 10-2.  So be sure not to miss this opportunity!  The Art Colony is located at 120 W. 3rd Ave, at the intersection of 3rd Ave W and 2nd St.  Contact the Art Colony for more info 218-387-2737 or

The 7th Annual Plein Air Competition is right around the bend!

The 7th Annual Plein Air Painting Competition begins Friday, August 28th, 2009 and runs through Sunday, September 6th. Artists are invited to paint outdoors anywhere in Cook County during the week and submit up to two paintings for the main competition and one painting each for the quick paint event and the night paint event. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in two categories: works on paper and works on canvas. This year, activities include;
Night Time Paint Out: Tuesday, September 1st, 9:00pm
Guest Speaker: Howard Sivertson- Wednesday, September 2nd, 7:00pm
Quick Paint: Thursday, September 3rd, 5:30pm
Artist Reception and Fish Fry- Friday, September 4th, 5-7pm.

An exhibition and sale of the paintings will be held on Saturday, September 5th 10am to 4pm and Sunday, September 6th, 10am to 2pm.

New Administrator at the Art Colony

Amy Demmer is the new Administrator at the Grand Marais Art Colony!  Originally from South Minneapolis, Amy made Grand Marais her home when she moved here four years ago to intern at the North House Folk School.   Amy has been an art appreciator since a young age when her Grandmother took her on weekly trips to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.  She continues to be a strong believer in the positive change that happens in the world when people encourage their creative spirit.
