The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World by Lewis Hyde. Lewis Hyde says in his introduction, “I have hoped to write an economy of the creative spirit: to speak of the inner gift that we accept as the object of our labor, and the outer gift that has become a vehicle of culture…my concern is the gift we long for, the gift that, when it comes, speaks commandingly to the soul and irresistibly moves us.” On the 25th anniversary of this resource that has become a life-changer for many artists, join us for a discussion about how the artist and the gift navigate an uneasy relationship with the market economy and commodification.
Participants will purchase or check out the book, meet on the first date to get to know one another and discuss an overview of their book. They will spend the month reading, and return on February 21 for a final discussion.
There is a suggested event donation of $10. Participants are asked to give based on their means and can add on a donation of a self-designated amount upon check out.
This event will remain open until February 4, 2019. Please register before this date.
