Unbound: Altered Books

What happens to books once they go out of print or no longer serve their usual function? In this experimental workshop students will be introduced to the creative world of altered books as vehicles of self-expression and communication through a multi-disciplinary approach. Using the book as a raw material we will explore a variety of methods to transform books experimentally and conceptually to help each student create their own personal narrative. Students will develop a richer understanding of the field and history of altered books through exposure to pioneering artists in the field and critical and creative problem-solving skills. Expect to initiate work that unifies form and content through process-driven enquiry. Time will be allotted for presentations, demonstrations and discussions. Prerequisite: while this class is open to a variety of skill levels it is not a good fit for complete beginners. Some prior art making experience is preferred.
